Anna + Chris | Downtown Gadsden Engagement Photos

Between Chris's return from a nine-month deployment and Anna beginning treatments, I was so fortunate to be able to spend a little time with these two for their downtown Gadsden engagement photos. I showed these pictures to some mutual friends right after I finished editing them, and the conversation between the three of us went a little bit like this: "She's so gorgeous." "And so kind, too, though. You can see it in her eyes." "With a little bit of 'I'll kick your butt, and I'm not afraid to do it if I have to,' though."

I feel like that begins to sum up Anna pretty well, and Chris is her perfect complement. For someone who, in her own words, doesn't "like going places", Chris drags her around until she realizes she's having a good time, because she certainly does with him. The classic introvert/extrovert relationship, they're perfect together.

Having been apart for nine months and facing an even tougher few months ahead, it was easy for them to express their love. Basically, I loved spending time with them, I love their photos, and I loved that they opened themselves up in front of my camera to preserve this memory.

Update: This beautiful lady passed away on November 24, 2014, at age 23, after a hard-fought battle with ovarian cancer. I don't understand why things like this have to happen to young, amazing people like Anna, and I don't suppose I'm meant to. I so hate knowing she's not with us anymore, but I'm thankful for the rest I'm confident she's found. Chris and her family are handling her loss with grace and peace, and they've welcomed a new member to their family, Anna Taylor Hughes, Anna's newest niece.

Anna begins her third treatment this week, if my memory is correct. That "I'll kick your butt if I have to" attitude serves her well in her fight. You can see it in the picture on the left.

We finished up with a shot of the sun pouring in behind them as we stood in the middle of the street, hoping to avoid both cars and trains. (For reals, Gadsden has a live train that still runs through the middle of one of downtown's busiest streets.)

On the drive home, this was the view of the final minutes of the sun setting. I'll take it as a good omen.

I'm thankful for a community that surrounds these two in love and prayers. I'm thankful they can rely on each other for strength when the other feels week. I'm thankful for their love and can-do, will-do attitude. I'm thankful for Anna's amazing family and Chris for her to lean on. And I'm thankful for God's goodness that understands when we don't.
